For our first profile of the month, we present Dr. Antonino Fugazzotto, a specialist in orthopedic surgery and traumatology, as well as a sports medicine physician (SSMS), who works at the Ouchy Orthopedic Center. Dr. Fugazzotto has had a professionally fulfilling 2019 with numerous scientific projects to his credit. He recently completed his advanced interdisciplinary training in sports medicine at Medicol and successfully obtained his diploma. In collaboration with Dr. Steve Brenn, a scientific article is currently under review, and Dr. Fugazzotto is also working on a new study. He will soon undertake a one-month internship to further his specialization in shoulder orthopedic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
After obtaining his FMH (Swiss Medical Association) certification in orthopedic surgery and traumatology at the Fribourg Cantonal Hospital, Dr. Antonino Fugazzotto joined Medicol in 2018 to train in sports medicine. With Dr. Vincent Chollet, Dr. Stéphane Borloz, and Dr. Jacques Vallotton, all sports medicine physicians and members of Medicol, as his primary instructors, Dr. Fugazzotto graduated earlier this year. At Medicol, Dr. Fugazzotto holds daily consultations at the Ouchy Orthopedic Center as a senior resident. For cases requiring surgery, Dr. Fugazzotto benefited from one-on-one fellowship training with Dr. Steve Brenn, a shoulder surgeon, at the Bois Cerf Clinic. Medicol has been recognized as a postgraduate training site in sports medicine since 2015 by the SSMS (Swiss Society of Medical Sciences and Techniques) and in orthopedics since 2018 by the FMH. Medicol gives aspiring doctors the opportunity to specialize.

Drs. Steve Brenn and Antonino Fugazzotto recently submitted a scientific article addressing partial rotator cuff tears, and another study concerning shoulder arthro-MRI is currently being developed with the radiologists at Clinique Bois-Cerf. Dr. Antonino Fugazzotto also participated in the "Return to Active Life" patient information and follow-up program on shoulder instability and acromioclavicular injuries. This November, Dr. Antonino Fugazzotto will be a speaker at the Medicol 2019 Congress on shoulder surgery, which brings together nearly 200 healthcare professionals in Lausanne.

Due to his interest in shoulder surgery and his desire to deepen his knowledge of arthroscopy and prosthetic surgery, Dr. Antonino Fugazzotto contacted Dr. Jon JP Warner, the founder and director of the Boston Shoulder Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In May 2019, Dr. Fugazzotto traveled to the United States for a month to further his specialization. He undertook an observation period with Dr. Warner, shadowing him in the operating room, discussing diagnoses during consultations, and participating in seminars for complex cases as well as the weekly Sports Shoulder Conference. In 2020, after completing his training at Medicol, Dr. Fugazzotto planned to continue his career in Munich, Germany.
