Dr Patrick Vienne

This month's profile features Dr. Patrick Vienne, a specialist in orthopedic surgery and traumatology, who has over 20 years of experience treating foot and ankle conditions. His priority as a surgeon is to preserve and restore the anatomy of the lower extremities, but he also places great emphasis on conservative treatment.

Originally from Fribourg, Dr. Patrick Vienne completed most of his medical training in German-speaking Switzerland and a fellowship at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, USA. From 1999 to 2007, he headed the Foot and Ankle Department at the Balgrist University Clinic in Zurich. After more than eight years at Klinik St. Anna in Lucerne, he joined Clinique Bois-Cerf in Lausanne and Medicol in 2015.
At Medicol, Dr. Patrick Vienne prioritizes the transmission of his knowledge to ensure the next generation of medical professionals. Following his experience in Lucerne, where he led the training of resident physicians, he is the primary liaison with the Swiss Medical Association (FMH) for postgraduate training in orthopedic surgery and musculoskeletal trauma. The Ouchy Orthopedic Center, developed in partnership between Medicol and Hirslanden, was recognized in 2018 as an ISFM Category C training institution. Since January 2020, Medicol has had five physicians in training, including two specialists in orthopedics. The main objective of these joint efforts is to offer physicians an alternative to the academic setting, with one-to-one teaching that allows them to develop their surgical repertoire in each orthopedic subspecialty represented at the Bois-Cerf Clinic.
Dr. Patrick Vienne also actively participates as a speaker at numerous conferences organized by Medicol. In February 2020, he will speak at a symposium on overuse injuries and foot trauma associated with trail running. Registration for this event, aimed at healthcare professionals and experienced athletes, is now closed, but videos of the presentations will be available on medicol.ch.
Scientific activities
Foot and ankle surgery has always appealed to Dr. Patrick Vienne. A keen sportsman, he won several running competitions and twice achieved third place in the Sierre-Zinal Race, also known as the Race of the Five 4000s. This passion, along with an understanding of the challenges and expectations of athletes, solidified his choice of this medical specialty.
Furthermore, it is a highly diverse surgical field, with very precise techniques, encompassing osteotomies (cuts made in the bone), arthrodeses (fusion of an injured joint), ligament reconstructions, tendon transfers, and ankle replacements. All these techniques, the variety of injuries to be treated, and the evolution of surgery over the last twenty years have led to this specialization, based on the principle of anatomically sound surgery.
In this regard, Dr. Patrick Vienne is the originator of an innovative surgical technique, the ReveL osteotomy, which aims to correct hallux valgus deformity. It was developed with his team in the early 2000s in Balgrist and continues to be constantly refined.
Currently, Dr. Patrick Vienne is supervising several scientific and clinical studies. After conducting an initial study in 2013 on simultaneous bilateral hallux valgus correction, he tasked his fellow, Dr. Amadou Cissé, with analyzing and publishing the results on over 40 patients with two years of follow-up. This article, currently in press, demonstrates that operating on both feet simultaneously allows for full weight-bearing on both legs from the first postoperative day, as well as requiring only one anesthetic and one recovery period. This approach shortens the duration of work incapacity without negatively impacting outcomes, with a patient satisfaction rate of 96% in 2003.
More than six times a year, Dr. Patrick Vienne meets with foot and ankle specialists in French-speaking Switzerland, founders of the Ortho Foot Club.

Without meaning to make a pun, Dr. Patrick Vienne is working tirelessly on all fronts, constantly brimming with ideas. He would like to begin a study soon on hallux valgus revisions. This would involve examining the results obtained with patients who had already undergone initial surgery and were subsequently operated on again by Dr. Vienne using the ReveL technique.
