This month's portrait is dedicated to Dr. Mathieu Hofer, a specialist in orthopedic surgery and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system, who focuses specifically on ligament and prosthetic surgery of the knee and hip.

In association with Medicol

Dr. Mathieu Hofer studied medicine at the University of Lausanne and obtained his FMH (Swiss Medical Association) specialization in orthopedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system in 2008. He was appointed head of the prosthetic group at the CHUV (Lausanne University Hospital) orthopedic hospital, then head of the orthopedics and traumatology department at the North Vaud Hospitals in Saint-Loup. In 2012, he partnered with Dr. Alec Cikes to create the Synergie medical center, where he is responsible for lower limb surgery. Around the same time, he joined the Bois-Cerf Clinic in Lausanne and became a Medicol physician.

As part of Medicol, Dr. Mathieu Hofer regularly participates in medical training events, both as an attendee and as a speaker. In recent years, he has shared his expertise with the many visitors to the Swiss health trade fair, Planète Santé. He was a speaker at the 2017 Medicol Congress on hip surgery and played a key role as moderator at the 2018 Medicol Congress, which focused on prosthetic surgery and knee arthroscopy.

In March 2020, he was once again in the spotlight. He spoke alongside Dr. Jacques Vallotton at a conference for physicians in the Lausanne region on the diagnosis and management of the most common pathologies of the patellofemoral joint. The video of his presentation will be available in mid-March on medicol.ch.

Dr. Mathieu Hofer benefits from the advantages of the Medicol network, including training opportunities and the chance to discuss and exchange ideas on complex cases with specialist colleagues who are members of this expert panel. Medicol currently brings together more than 32 physicians in Lausanne, all specializing in musculoskeletal disorders.

Scientific activities

A specialist in orthopedics and traumatology, Dr. Mathieu Hofer focuses particularly on various age-related degenerative knee and hip conditions, as well as accidental injuries in both amateur and professional athletes. He therefore has a dual expertise, performing both prosthetic and ligament surgery on the lower limbs.

Dr. Mathieu Hofer's goal is to remain at the forefront of the latest surgical techniques and medical innovations in his areas of expertise. Regarding degenerative pathologies, to gain a more precise understanding of the anatomy and better plan the operations, he invariably uses a CT scanner to perform three-dimensional (3D) planning before each procedure. This allows him to offer custom-made implants if the patient's anatomy requires it. Indeed, personalized knee prostheses are a more recent practice than hip prostheses due to the more complex natural mechanics of this joint. In ligament repairs, particularly for cruciate ligaments, he takes special care to repair associated lesions (meniscal tears, including lesions of the posterior meniscal ramp) rather than resecting or removing them.

For teaching and multidisciplinary exchange purposes, Dr. Mathieu Hofer regularly welcomes fellow surgeons and physiotherapists during his operating room procedures. Interdisciplinary collaboration with all healthcare professionals is central to his principles of integrated care. Indeed, optimal patient care depends not only on surgery, but also on physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and ongoing support. A network of specialist physicians and caregivers streamlines the patient's journey.

New products

Since 2012, Dr. Mathieu Hofer has co-directed, with Dr. Alec Cikes, a center entirely dedicated to the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. Together, they plan to establish various research and development groups, particularly focused on the shoulder, knee, and hip. Their goal is to bring together a network of surgeons and compile all the data obtained on specific injuries to generate scientific studies and publications. Currently, the structure for collecting and analyzing this data is under development.
