Partial supraspinatus tendon injuries: what treatment?

As part of postgraduate training at the Ouchy Orthopedic Center, resident physicians and their supervising physicians conduct research in their areas of expertise. Drs. Antonino Fugazzotto, Steve Brenn (Supervising Physician), and Jacques Vallotton (Supervising Physician) published a scientific article in the Swiss Medical Review on the topic: "Partial lesions of the supraspinatus tendon: what treatment?"«

Partial rotator cuff tears are a common condition. The preferred imaging modality is magnetic resonance imaging with arthrography, including abduction and external rotation imaging. Currently, there is no consensus regarding the management of these tears. For tears less than 50% of tendon thickness (grades 1 and 2), we recommend treatment with physiotherapy and possibly subacromial bursa injection. For all tears greater than 50% (grade 3), if conservative treatment fails, our management plan includes arthroscopic repair of the tear.
