For our August profile, we present Professor Dante Marchesi, a specialist in orthopedic surgery and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system, dedicated to complex spinal treatments. Since 2002, he has operated at the Clinique Bois-Cerf in Lausanne and co-founded Medicol in 2009 with Dr. Jacques Vallotton.

Professor Dante Marchesi happily shares his thoughts on the development of Medicol, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Since its founding, the organization has come a long way.
Medicol currently has 32 member physicians and, with the opening of the Ouchy Orthopedic Center in September 2018, its number of employees has increased to 21. Medicol is made up of a highly qualified multidisciplinary team from diverse backgrounds, which allows it considerable autonomy in organizing training events, as well as in creating and disseminating medical information to patients.
Medicol now has a strong online presence, offering resources for patients such as fact sheets on musculoskeletal disorders. For the Hirslanden Group, the Medicol team developed "Return to Active Life," a program to support patients before, during, and after their surgery. This program has achieved excellent results in terms of speeding up patient recovery and increasing their satisfaction following various surgical procedures. In addition to statistics, the Professor has personally witnessed this firsthand during the surgery of a family member.
Since Medicol's core value lies in the pooling of skills and knowledge, Professor Dante Marchesi aims to strengthen its development for the training of young doctors. Numerous events are dedicated to continuing education for both specialist physicians and other healthcare professionals, such as physiotherapists and occupational therapists. Furthermore, a significant step has been taken with the recognition of the Ouchy Orthopedic Center as an FMH (Swiss Medical Association) training center in orthopedics and traumatology, in partnership with the Bois-Cerf Clinic. .
Scientific activities
Professor Dante Marchesi specializes in spinal surgery and treats in particular major surgical operations such as spinal fixation, severe osteoarthritis, as well as re-operations.
Spinal surgery is a relatively recent discipline that began to develop in the 1980s. Professor Dante Marchesi contributed to its evolution as a teacher and also as head of the surgical department, notably at the Inselspital in Bern and at McGill University in Canada. He also participated in the development of spinal fixation devices used during spinal surgeries.
Professor Dante Marchesi specializes in adult scoliosis and revision surgery in the context of non-union surgery, a field in which he is regularly invited to speak at conferences. Recently, he traveled to Madrid at the request of the Spanish Spine Society and presented at the annual congress of the Spine Surgery Society, which this year was held in Brazil.
In addition to being part of the editorial board of several important scientific journals, Prof. Dante Marchesi is responsible for education within the AO Foundation (working association for osteosynthesis) as well as a founding member of AOSPINE.
Professor Dante Marchesi now wishes to encourage and support young doctors. For him, it is important to train the next generation of physicians and support them in their development projects, enabling them to achieve the advances in medicine of tomorrow.
Sharing experience is one of Professor Dante Marchesi's future projects. Along with other Medicol trainers, he will soon become an instructor for doctors in FMH (Swiss Medical Association) training. This will allow him to pass on his knowledge to train them in patient consultations, radiographic analysis, and ultimately, diagnosis.
